Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. Normally, the body produces sweat to regulate body temperature. Sometimes, the nerves that control the sweat glands become overactive and excess sweat is produced. It can have a significant impact on self-confidence and can affect your quality of life. Botox blocks the communication between nerves and sweat glands
What areas can be treated by botox?
Botox can be used to treat excessive sweating in areas such as the underarms, palms, soles, scalp and forehead, and groin; in fact, nearly any area affected by excessive sweating can benefit from this treatment.
The treatment is administered through tiny injections of Botox to the affected area, taking between 10-20 minutes to perform. It is important to note that tiny pricks can be felt however an anaesthetic cream can be applied beforehand to numb the skin or ice during the procedure. Acetaminophen taken one hour before the procedure is also known to reduce discomfort.
The results can be noticed within a few days typically between 7 – 14 days. The treatment will last for between 6 to 12 months before another injection is required.
Are their side effects?
Mild discomfort during Botox treatment, occasional bruising, and temporary muscle weakness (when treating the hands) may occur. Having your care assessed and managed by a skin expert (dermatologist) helps minimize these side effects
